Peritonitis denotes inflammation of the mesothelial lining of the peritoneal cavity and its loose subepithelial connective tissue. As simple as this descriptive definition of a host response sounds, its clinical impact on the entire host may be complex. No less complicated is the large number of confusing and nebulous clinical diagnoses used today to describe the wide range of conditions associated with peritonitis. Fry and his 16 coworkers deserve great respect for integrating current knowledge with the unifying basic concept of peritonitis and organizing the information into a well-written book of 15 chapters.
