To the Editor: In his review of mechanical ventilation (April 14 issue),¹ Tobin examines the new alternative methods of ventilation, including noninvasive ventilatory techniques. But he fails to mention a noninvasive method of ventilation that is based on the intermittent delivery of a negative pressure -- the iron lung.

In recent studies,^2,3,4,5 the iron lung has been proposed as an alternative noninvasive method for the treatment of acute respiratory failure in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
