This book is a distillation of rather less than half of the two-volume Textbook of Diabetes, also edited by Pickup and Williams and published in 1991 (Boston: Blackwell Scientific); it weighs 1.5 kg, as compared with the 4.9 kg of the original. Maybe every editor would like the chance to republish the most potentially popular parts of a large and expensive multiauthored textbook. Blackwell Scientific has correctly targeted this slim, elegant, and very well illustrated book to a broader readership than might consult a much longer, apparently formidable textbook.
