Hepatocellular carcinoma is one of the most common malignant tumors in the world. It is a major cause of death from cancer in eastern Asia, especially China, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, and Korea, and sub-Saharan Africa, particularly Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, and Mozambique.1 The annual number of deaths worldwide is estimated to exceed 250,000.
