Bone is remodeled continuously during adulthood through theresorption of old bone by osteoclasts and the subsequent formationof new bone by osteoblasts. These two closely coupled eventsare responsible for renewing the skeleton while maintainingits anatomical and structural integrity. Under normal conditions, bone remodeling proceeds in cycles in which osteoclasts adhereto bone and subsequently remove it by acidification and proteolyticdigestion. Shortly after the osteoclasts have left the resorptionsite, osteoblasts invade the area and begin the process of formingnew bone by secreting osteoid (a matrix of collagen and otherproteins), which is eventually mineralized.
