The use of direct DNA-based testing in forensic analysis hasbecome increasingly common. In the past, genetic identity orsimilarity could be inferred by comparison of ABO blood groupsand other protein-based measurements. These measures are sufficientlyvariable within the population to permit a reasonable test ofidentity between different samples. However, there are two majoradvantages to direct DNA testing. First, it makes use of manymore variables, thus strengthening the significance of a matchbetween specimens. Second, the physical stability of DNA makesit possible to analyze minute amounts of forensic material manyyears after a criminal incident.
