In April 1994, my confidence and sense of security in my professionalstatus and competence were shaken to the core. In that month, for reasons too complex to elaborate, I lost my new job a mere10 working days after my arrival in Norfolk, Virginia. Two monthslater, my wife, also a physician, lost her administrative job.She received several offers of positions in other cities relativelysoon. I, however, entered a trying and debilitating one-yearperiod during which, despite my best efforts, I could not finda job.
