The fact that the title is metaphorical rather than literal should not dissuade physicians from reading, enjoying, and profiting from this book. Certainly, anyone concerned about the old stereotypes of "the drunken Indian" and the special metabolic weakness of Native Americans for "firewater" will appreciate Mancall's succinct summaries of the many kinds of recent research on Native American drinking. These summaries are smoothly interwoven with the first serious attempt to chronicle the sad history from the time when Europeans introduced distilled beverages to this continent until the United States won independence from England.
