Presentation of Case

A 29-month-old girl was readmitted to the hospital because of increasing ataxia and abnormal eye movements.

The child had been born after a 30-week gestation, with a birth weight of 1.35 kg. The mother was reported to have abused alcohol and other drugs, especially medications for pain, throughout gestation. The girl was transferred to this hospital, intubated for approximately 1 week, and discharged at 31/ 2 months. Her early developmental milestones were delayed; her first steps were at 21 months, and she walked in a stable fashion at 24 months. Bilateral esotropia was operated on at 21 months.
