Cancer of the ovarian epithelium is the fourth most common cause of death from cancer in women and the leading cause of death from gynecologic cancer. At the time of diagnosis, the majority of women with the disease have involvement of one or both ovaries, with peritoneal implants outside the pelvis or positive retroperitoneal–inguinal nodes (stage III, according to the classification of the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics), or they have distant metastases (stage IV).1
