To the Editor: The report by Giovannucci et al. (Sept. 7 issue)1 documenting a chemopreventive effect of aspirin against the development of colorectal cancer in women adds evidence to the already abundant data strongly suggesting that nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have antineoplastic effects in the colon. Recent findings, however, call into question the hypothesis that these authors and Marcus2 in his accompanying editorial suggest — that the antineoplastic effect of NSAIDs is mediated mainly by their ability to inhibit the synthesis of prostaglandins.
