"Textbook" is defined variously as "a book for regular study by pupils, especially as an authority and standard in a particular subject," or as a "book giving instructions in the principles of study." In general, the books we call textbooks have blurred the distinction between textbooks and encyclopedias, the latter providing information on all or many branches of knowledge in the form of articles. In fact, although most medical textbooks include sections on principles, they are mainly encyclopedias of disease.
