Presentation of Case

An 18-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of hepatomegaly and ascites.

The patient had been in excellent health until four weeks earlier, when she started taking norethindrone–ethinyl estradiol tablets. Four days later, she began to have abdominal "bloating" and discontinued the medication; she continued to eat meals, without nausea or vomiting. Her physician elicited a history of a weight gain of 3.6 kg over a period of three months and found abdominal distention.
