To the Editor: The article by den Heijer et al. (March 21 issue)1supports our finding that hyperhomocysteinemia is a risk factorfor deep-vein thrombosis that is independent of coexisting abnormalitiesof naturally occurring anticoagulants.2 This important confirmationchallenges the suggestion by Mandel et al., in their articlein the same issue,3 that hyperhomocysteinemia increases therisk of thrombosis only if the elevation in homocysteinemiais associated with the presence of factor V Leiden.
