Presentation of Case

An 18-month-old boy was admitted to the hospital because of a persistent cough and increasing tachypnea.

The infant had been born at 31 weeks' gestation. A grade 1 intraventricular hemorrhage, detected by cranial ultrasonographic examination during the neonatal period, was complicated by hyperbilirubinemia and transient apnea. Twelve months before the current admission, an evaluation performed because of lethargy and delayed development resulted in a diagnosis of intracranial neuroblastoma, without radiographic evidence of metastatic disease.
