The current concern about quality of care in the United Statesis deeply paradoxical in many ways. From a technical and scientificstandpoint, the capabilities of the nation's health care systemare extraordinary. Decades of biomedical research have culminatedin new forms of technology that have greatly improved the healthof Americans. Two examples (benefiting very different demographicgroups) are neonatal intensive care units and new inpatienttreatments for coronary artery disease.
