The Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) has announced the approval of a new diagnosis code for palliative care, which was included in the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical modification on October 1, 1996.1 The new code will enable coders reviewing hospital charts to indicate that palliative care was delivered to a dying patient during a hospital stay.
