The Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) has announced the approval of a new diagnosis code for palliative care, which was included in the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical modification on October 1, 1996.¹ The new code will enable coders reviewing hospital charts to indicate that palliative care was delivered to a dying patient during a hospital stay.
