Previous articles in this series discussed alternative waysto define the quality of health care,1 state-of-the-art methodsfor measuring and improving quality,2,3 the origins of the qualitydebate,4 and the implications of capitated payment arrangementsfor the quality of care.5 Many readers may remain unsure, however, about how efforts to measure and manage quality in our healthcare system will evolve, and about how physicians should respond. In this concluding article in the series, we review some likelynear-term developments in society's continuing efforts to improvethe quality of care, and we discuss their implications for physiciansand their patients.
