Previous articles in this series discussed alternative ways to define the quality of health care,1 state-of-the-art methods for measuring and improving quality,2,3 the origins of the quality debate,4 and the implications of capitated payment arrangements for the quality of care.5 Many readers may remain unsure, however, about how efforts to measure and manage quality in our health care system will evolve, and about how physicians should respond. In this concluding article in the series, we review some likely near-term developments in society's continuing efforts to improve the quality of care, and we discuss their implications for physicians and their patients.
