The photograph of Bruno Bettelheim on the cover of this new and masterly biography encapsulates many of the powerful and conflicting images that have come to define this complex man. He is seated, reading, in front of an elaborate candelabrum, an elderly man with an expression of such depth that in it one can find wisdom, weariness, disdain, impatience, warmth, and above all, direct intensity.
