Figure 1. A 78-year-old woman who had undergone right hemicolectomy to treat carcinoma of the cecum with involvement of regional lymph nodes noticed a new periumbilical subcutaneous swelling two months after her surgery. Biopsy revealed an adenocarcinoma with the same histologic features as the original cecal tumor. The patient chose not to have any treatment. Two months later, the nodule had enlarged substantially, and abdominal and pelvic computed tomographic (CT) scans were obtained to assess the extent of metastatic disease before further treatment options were discussed.
