Except for abortion, laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy has generated more controversy and discussion than any other type of gynecologic surgery in recent times. Is it because hysterectomy is itself controversial? Could it be that the benefits of laparoscopy remain uncertain? A cynic would suggest that the issues surrounding laparoscopy and laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy in particular continue to be debated because the technique has been promoted by those closely tied to the industries that gain financially from its use and because it has been tested with study designs biased toward achieving favorable results.
