A 65-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of severe abdominal pain and recurrent diarrhea.
The patient had been well until five years earlier, when he and his wife had nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea after consuming meat in Istanbul, Turkey. The patient took bismuth tablets, and his symptoms resolved in three days. Thereafter, he had bouts of mild abdominal pain and diarrhea about once a month. His wife remained well after the initial episode. Four years before admission, the patient's pain became more severe, with occult blood in the stools.
