To the Editor: Foreman et al. (Jan. 16 issue)1 report the propagation of Kaposi's sarcoma–associated herpesvirus (KSHV) from Kaposi's sarcoma–derived cell lines, using cells of the human embryonal-kidney epithelial-cell line as targets for infection. In three experiments, we attempted to propagate KSHV directly from Kaposi's sarcoma tumors by culturing fresh, finely minced tissue with 293 cells, some of which were kindly given us by the University of Michigan group and some of which were purchased from the American Tissue Culture Collection (ATCC), Rockville, Maryland.
