After years of bad news, there is optimism in the battle againstAIDS. In the United States, the number of deaths declined 19percent in the first nine months of 1996 as compared with thesame period in 1995 from 37,900 to 30,700.1 Among themany reasons are better medical care and better treatments forhuman immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and opportunisticinfections.
