Figure 1. Progressive painless swelling of the right leg developed in an 81-year-old woman. Duplex scanning of the legs showed no evidence of venous thrombosis. Ventilationperfusion scanning of the lungs suggested a high probability of pulmonary embolus, and treatment with heparin was initiated. Because of the possibility of pelvic venous thrombosis or an abdominal pelvic mass with vascular compression, a computed tomographic (CT) scan of the abdomen and pelvis was obtained.
