To the Editor: Malacrida et al. (Jan. 1 issue)1 describe a hospital-based analysis of the outcome of acute myocardial infarction in women and men. They conclude that, after adjustment for various prognostic factors including age, there is a small independent association between female sex and early mortality and morbidity after suspected acute myocardial infarction.

However, they do not refer to the study by Sonke et al.,2 who used community-based data in Auckland, New Zealand. They reported that the higher in-hospital case fatality rate in women after acute cardiac events was largely explained by the lower case fatality rate before admission . . .
