To the Editor: The article by Mitler et al. on the sleep of long-haul truck drivers (Sept. 11 issue)1 presents data on drowsiness. The authors state, "Of the total of 29,310 six-minute video recordings of the drivers' faces that we analyzed, 1989 of the segments (7 percent) were judged to show a drowsy driver." However, according to a footnote to Table 4, it appears that the numerator for this percentage is derived from the sampled segments (consisting of one 6-minute segment per 30 minutes of observation time) and the denominator is the universe of segments from which the sample was . . .
