Inspection of the oral cavity and neck is part of any routine physical examination. Frequently, a swelling in the neck may be due to an infection. Thorough inspection of the oral cavity and palpation of the neck, paired with a detailed history taking (including information about changes in voice, eating habits, and breathing, as well as risk factors) will sometimes reveal other pathologic conditions. Cancers of the head and neck constitute approximately 5 percent of all malignant diseases, and for most patients, recognizing signs and symptoms early is the chance for a cure.
