Heartburn is a serious symptom that merits more attention frompatients and physicians. It is the hallmark of gastroesophagealreflux, a disorder that may lead to esophagitis, progressingin some patients to the metaplastic columnar mucosal changesknown as Barrett's esophagus, and ultimately to adenocarcinoma.
