To the Editor: In his editorial on the appropriate use of carotid endarterectomy (Nov. 12 issue),1 Dr. Chassin states that "data on the rates of death or stroke within 30 days after surgery, adjusted for the severity of carotid disease and coexisting conditions, should be routinely available to physicians and patients." It has been clear for several years that the benefit of this procedure is highly dependent on surgical risk. Although further refinement may be required, validated methods of adjusting the rates of complications on the basis of the risk factors of the patients are currently available.2
