As I walk down the halls of the hospital to see my patients,I cannot help but notice a marked change. The sight of a primarycare internist taking care of his or her patients while theyare hospitalized is becoming increasingly rare, thanks to thesupplanting of general internists by "hospitalists" in the nameof cost effectiveness. It seems as though, almost overnight,general internists have been declared unqualified to take careof hospitalized patients.
