Recent progress in understanding the genetic basis of susceptibilityto breast cancer has simultaneously allowed the identificationof women at increased risk and spawned controversy over theircare. Like such contentious issues as the utility of genetictesting, the question of prophylactic mastectomy elicits a widerange of opinions. However, the evaluation of divergent viewsof the efficacy of prophylactic mastectomy has been severelyhampered by the almost complete absence of facts.
