To the Editor: The study by Weinblatt et al. (Jan. 28 issue)1attempts to demonstrate the efficacy of combined therapy withmethotrexate and etanercept through a randomized, double-blindtrial. This study design is powerful, but a prerequisite isthat the patients assigned to treatment and those assigned toplacebo must have equal probabilities of achieving the primaryend point in this case, the American College of Rheumatologycriteria for a 20 percent improvement in measures of diseaseactivity.
