Since the introduction of amniocentesis for the prenatal detectionof genetic diseases, there has been a progressive refinementof the criteria used to determine who should be offered thetest. Initially, amniocentesis was offered to women consideredto be at high risk for having a pregnancy affected by Down'ssyndrome solely on the basis of age, because of the high ratesof miscarriage associated with the procedure.
