To the Editor: We previously reported on paronychia in patients treated with indinavir and noted that the effects of indinavir on skin resembled the effects of retinoids on skin.1 We recently observed another retinoid-like effect of indinavir on skin.

Ten homosexual men who were positive for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) presented with loss of hair between March 1997 and March 1998. Their median age was 40 years (range, 30 to 51). Three had the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. The mean CD4 lymphocyte count was 243 per cubic millimeter (range, 12 to 499). Plasma HIV type 1 (HIV-1) RNA was undetectable . . .
