In our modern world, overweight is becoming the norm and frank obesity commonplace, but the problem of obesity is not new. In the 17th century, obesity was recognized as a cause of death and disability, and obese persons were ridiculed in some societies. Nor are attempts to treat obesity new. The January 7, 1865, issue of Harper's Weekly published instructions on weight loss that are not so different from the advice offered by sensible physicians today.
