To the Editor: Sagristà-Sauleda et al. (Dec. 30 issue),1 in their report on the long-term follow-up of patients with idiopathic chronic pericardial effusion, conclude that pericardiectomy should be considered whenever a large effusion recurs after pericarditis. This recommendation is based on the findings among the 28 patients in the study, 20 of whom eventually underwent pericardiectomy because of the presence of cardiac tamponade. We would like to emphasize two points that we feel were not adequately addressed by the authors.
