To the Editor: In their letter on the use of heparin duringcardiopulmonary bypass in patients with a history of heparin-inducedthrombocytopenia, Pötzsch et al. (Aug. 17 issue)1 do notmention whether they obtained informed consent from the subjectsin the study. This study posed substantial risk because heparin-inducedthrombocytopenia and thrombosis can have devastating consequences. When studies involving substantial risk to subjects are reportedin the Correspondence section, it would be reassuring to seeit clearly stated that informed consent was obtained.
