To the Editor: Morrison et al. (April 6 issue)1 report that pharmacies in predominantly nonwhite neighborhoods in New York City are less likely than those in predominantly white neighborhoods to carry supplies of opioid analgesics adequate to treat patients needing palliative care. Freeman and Payne,2 in the accompanying editorial, suggest that these findings indicate racial bias within the health care system. Although other investigators have convincingly demonstrated racial bias among health care providers,3 it is not clear that such bias is responsible for the results of this study.
