Over the past 15 years, the increasing use of echocardiographyhas dramatically changed our understanding of the prevalenceand progression of aortic-valve stenosis. Aortic stenosis maybe due to rheumatic disease or to calcification of a congenitallybicuspid or normal trileaflet valve. However, in the UnitedStates and Europe, calcific valvular disease is by far the mostcommon cause of aortic stenosis.
