To the Editor: Döhner and colleagues (Dec. 28 issue)1 report that in a study of chromosomal abnormalities in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, patients with 17p deletions had a poor prognosis, with a median survival time of 32 months. Of the 325 patients enrolled in the study, 77 (24 percent) had received prior chemotherapy. Although prior chemotherapy is not reported as a prognostic factor in this study, it is the standard of care for patients with advanced disease.
