Expandable metal stents have been approved by the Food and DrugAdministration for the treatment of gastrointestinal obstructiondue to cancer. Although they have not been approved for usein benign disease, there are specific clinical indications forwhich expandable metal stents may be beneficial. This articlereviews the uses of expandable metal stents for gastrointestinalobstruction due to cancer.
