Cryptosporidiosis is caused by cryptosporidium, a parasite classifiedas an emerging pathogen by the Centers for Disease Control andPrevention (CDC).1 The organism infects the gastrointestinalepithelium to produce a diarrhea that is self-limited in immunocompetentpersons but potentially life-threatening in immunocompromisedpersons, especially those with the acquired immunodeficiencysyndrome (AIDS).
