Homocysteine is a simple amino acid that has recently receiveda great deal of attention as a risk factor for atherothromboticvascular disease. There is reasonably compelling epidemiologicevidence of an association between the plasma homocysteine leveland the risk of vascular disease in the coronary, carotid, andperipheral circulations. The mechanisms by which hyperhomocysteinemiapromotes atherosclerosis are less clear. They may include oxidativeinjury to the vascular wall, vascular-cell proliferation, andthe development of a prothrombotic state.
