To the Editor: Often, it is forgotten that the postmenopausal reduction in estrogen levels increases the levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and Lp(a) lipoprotein. Sometimes this effect is more important than and precedes the reduction in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels. Postmenopausal hormonal changes cause a decrease in LDL-receptor activity, with a decrease in the apolipoprotein B–LDL catabolic rate.1
