A book that promises to summarize "the current status of research and practice" by its nature always falls short of the mark. There is no better example of such a book than this one on hormone-replacement therapy and cancer. Long-held notions about the benefits of hormone-replacement therapy were recently dispelled with the publication in the Journal of the American Medical Association of the first large randomized, placebo-controlled trial of conjugated equine estrogen plus medroxyprogesterone acetate in healthy women.
