The diagnosis of the hematologic cancers presents a dauntingchallenge. The many stages of normal hematopoietic differentiationgive rise to a number of biologically and clinically distinctcancers. Inherited DNA-sequence variants do not appear to havea prominent causative role; rather, these diverse cancers aretypically initiated by acquired alterations to the genome ofthe cancer cell, such as chromosomal translocations, mutations,and deletions.
