Until recently, survival to hospital discharge was the primary outcome considered in reports concerning populations of critically ill patients. But a body of knowledge is now being developed about longer-term outcomes in survivors of critical illnesses, including reports about their health-related quality of life and conditions that impair that quality.1 The inherent challenge is to devise strategies for preventing or minimizing such sequelae.
