It has been almost 10 years and 2000 articles since the publicationof the article identifying the etiologic agent of Kaposi's sarcoma,a virus appropriately called Kaposi's sarcomaassociatedherpesvirus (KSHV) or, more recently, human herpesvirus 8. Inaddition to Kaposi's sarcoma, the virus is associated with severallymphoproliferative disorders, including certain malignant lymphomasand multicentric Castleman's disease. Purported associationswith other diseases, such as with multiple myeloma, have nowlargely been disproved. In this issue of the Journal, Cool etal. (pages 11131122) report the presence of KSHV in thelungs of patients with primary pulmonary hypertension.
