Every year in the United States, approximately 9500 new casesof laryngeal cancer are diagnosed, and 3800 patients die ofthis tumor. Persistent hoarseness is a warning sign that canlead to the detection of the tumor at an early stage. Such smalltumors (stage T1 or T2, N0, and M0, according to the tumornodemetastasisstaging system) are treatable with radiotherapy alone or withmodern surgical techniques, both of which can eradicate thetumor as well as preserve vocal quality.
